Triple Marker Screening

Useful For
Prenatal screening for Down syndrome, trisomy 18, and Open Spinal Bifida (OSB).
Method Description
This triple marker screen includes alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), estriol (uE3), total human chorionic gonadotropin (b-hCG).
Advisory Information
There are a variety of factors that can influence rates of these analytes, including age, alcohol, IVF pregnancy, maternal diabetes, and laboratories that typically compensate for these variables.
Specimen Type: Serum
Collection Container/Tube:
Preferred: Red top
Acceptable: Serum gel
Specimen Volume: 2-3 mL

Collection Instructions:

  1. Do not draw specimen after amniocentesis, as this could affect results.
  2. Centrifuge Immediately

Additional Information:

  • Blood needs to be drawn between 15 weeks 0 days and 22 weeks 6 days, which corresponds to a Femur Length (FL) or Biparietal diameter (BPD). (Recent USG is mandatory)
  • Initial or repeat testing is determined in the laboratory at the time of report and will be reported accordingly.
  • In case of IVF Pregnancy, days in-vitro and transfer date are required (Note: If the ovum is donated, donor age must be provided)
